"Why I prefer the field of science over any other is this one single fact: there is no final decision, but a process of constant discovery, discussion and leaning into the evidence that shifts as well. The questions mature as the answers compete."

Beetles at night

Some nights I get more beetles than moths. Beetles, especially the large ones, blunder into things, including me. The land on the sheet and, frequently, find themselves upside down on the concrete. I've become adept at kicking them off the porch with a soccer-style sweep of the foot. But occasionally an interesting one lands on the sheet and I take a photo, like this one of a net-winged beetle, Calopteron reticulatum, that showed up this morning. Fun!
